Dental Unit Waterlines: A Deeper Dive Workshop

February 1, 1:30 PM - 5:00 PM

CE Credits Available: 2.75

Crowne Plaza Atlanta Perimeter at Ravinia
4355 Ashford Dunwoody Rd NE, Atlanta, GA 30346

About the Session

Water is a vital component of modern dentistry and water supplied from the dental unit is used for most every routine dental procedure. Dental personnel are required to deliver safe water for dental care yet are often confused about why and how to ensure compliance.  This interactive and comprehensive program will take a deeper dive into all phases of compliance including the background science, and policies and protocols of maintaining and monitoring dental unit waterlines.

In this workshop, attendees will plunge into role play to create buy in for their waterline program and assure safety with their patients, cannonball into a card game (Slime Scene Investigation) to learn microorganisms implicated in DUWL contamination, and splash into hands-on water testing of various source water options. They will nosedive into waterline testing as they compare various testing options and pooled water testing.  Attendees will then take a deep SCUBA dive approach into the development of a tailored and written standard operating procedure to maintain waterlines compliance within their own practice setting.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the formation of biofilms in dental equipment, associated microorganisms, and related health risks.

  • Identify regulatory agencies, guidelines, and best practices that impact safe dental water

  • Discuss the importance of instructions for use (IFU) of dental units, germicidal agents, and DUWL testing kits

  • Apply evidence-based practices for selecting waterline treatment products and developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) for dental unit waterline maintenance and monitoring.
